Want to learn how to make tofu marinade? Keep reading and I will show you an quick and easy way to give a real boost of flavour!

People often think that tofu is quite bland but in reality, it’s quite similar to meat. You just have to flavour it. Marinating tofu is really simple way of adding flavour to tofu. Simply let it sit for at least one hour and you’re good to go!

How To Make Tofu Marinade?

1. Liquid aminos

Liquid aminos is the base for this marinade. If you haven’t heard of liquid aminos, it looks and taste similar to soy sauce. It can made by fermenting coconut sap with salt and water or treating soybeans with an acidic solution to break them down into free amino acids. They add a savoury, salty flavour to meals and are vegan/gluten-free. My favourite one is the Bragg Liquid Aminos.

2. Sesame Oil

Sesame oil has a very strong but tasty flavour. A little truly does go a long way (only needed 2 tablespoons of sesame oil).

3. Fresh Garlic & Ginger

What better way to add a boost of flavour than by adding fresh garlic and ginger into the marinade! I added three cloves of garlic and about an inch of fresh ginger but you can add more or less depending on your preference.

4. Maple Syrup

In order to balance out the saltiness of the soy sauce, I added some maple syrup. If you don’t have maple syrup on hand, you can replace it with agave syrup, honey or white/brown sugar. It really is up to you!

5. Tomato Puree

This might sound a bit out of place but tomato paste goes really well with the marinade. It gives a slightly acidic flavour and and creates a slightly thicker marinade. My favourite tomato pure is the Ceres Tomato Puree.

How long should you marinate tofu?

I recommend leaving on the marinade for at least one hour. If you have the time, you can leave it on for several hours or even overnight.

Prep Time 15 minutes

Ingredients

Marinade

  • cup liquid aminos
  • 2 tablespoons sesame oil
  • 3 cloves fresh garlic grated
  • 1 inch fresh ginger grated
  • 2 tablespoons maple syrup
  • 3 teaspoons tomato puree

Additional

  • 500 g firm tofu
  • 2 tablespoons Rice bran oil

Instructions

  • Place the tofu cubes into a large sealable container.
  • Add all the ingredients into a bowl and mix well. Pour the marinade over the tofu and gently mix through without braking the tofu. Allow the marinade to sit for at least
  • Heat a non-stick pan on high heat. After about a minute, add the oil and the tofu. Scrape out any of the remaining marinade into the pan. Stir gently and cook on high heat for 5-10 minutes. I find that after 5 minutes the water starts to evaporate and a thicker sauce is formed.
