What is in a Nutella Swirl Bread?

1. Dough

The dough is made of spelt flour. Although I haven’t tried it with white flour, I’m sure it would work. In addition to spelt flour, the dough requires a small amount of sugar, milk, yeast, salt and water. All together, these six ingredients create a delicious bread that is crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside.

Nutella

The start of the recipe is Nutella. Honestly, is there anyone who doesn’t like Nutella? I used a dairy free Nutella alternative called Nuttiva. It is a hazelnut spread that tastes just like Nutella.

Nutella Swirl Bread

  • 200 ml soy milk
  • 2 tablespoon sugar
  • 2 teaspoon yeast
  • 500 grams spelt flour
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • 200 ml water
  • 4 tablespoon nutella
  1. Add the milk and sugar into a small pot and heat until luke warm. Transfer the milk into a glass container and add the yeast. Cover with a plate and aset it aside. After 5 minutes the yeast should create a frothy layer.

  2. In a large mixing bowl add the spelt flour and salt. Next add the milk mixture and water and stir.

  3. Knead the dough on a floured surface. At first it will seem very sticky but that is ok. After about 5-10 minutes the dough should start to come together. If you find it’s too sticky add a bit more flour. But be careful not to add to much as it will take away from the texture of the bread.

  4. Slightly the mixing bowl and place the dough inside. Cover the bowl with a kitchen towel and set it aside for at least 1.5 hours.

  5. Place the dough on a floured surface and gently knead for about 30 seconds. Then using a rolling pin roll out the dough until it’s about 1cm in thickness.

  6. Add the nutella on top of the dough and spread using a butter knife. Roll the dough up and cut all the way down the middle. Gently braid the dough.

  7. Put the dough in a cake form lined with baking paper. Cover with a tea towel and allow it to rest for 30 minutes.

  8. Pre-heat the oven to 160 C (about 15 minutes after the bread has been resting). Put the bread into the oven and bake for 30 minutes.
